A Unicorn Is a Unicorn Is a Unicorn

It’s true.  Some people might argue that you can stick wings on it, but it’s really still just the same thing.  Dragons, on the other hand, come in all colors, shapes, and sizes, with at least half a dozen other differences besides.  I mean, would anyone really put Smaug (The Hobbit) and Mushu (Mulan) in the same category?

I sure wouldn’t.

After all, Smaug is an enormous, greedy, fire-breathing monster.  He killed hundreds of people so that he could take over the Lonely Mountain and sleep on a pile of gold.  Mushu is a tiny, humorous—albeit a bit self-serving—pipsqueak.  Ultimately, Mushu does prove himself to be a hero by helping Mulan defeat the Huns.  And he doesn’t seem to have any sort of attraction to precious metals.

Now, this might seem pretty unimportant…and, well, it is.  But it’s fun.  And that’s the point, right?  So for the next few weeks I’m going to be exploring the different types of dragons in literature, movies, and literally anywhere I can find dragons.
